Two remaining permaculture workshops

This Spring Red Clover Collective is hosting a series of workshops on Permaculture Skills for Sustainable City Living taught by Karen Stupski from the Heathcote Community.

Permaculture is the conscious design of sustainable human settlements by following nature’s patterns. It offers practical ways to meet basic human needs for water, food, waste recycling, energy, shelter, and social connection without harming the environment. Learn how you can apply permaculture in your own home!

Mar 14, 2009: 1-4 pm Caring for Soil

Permaculture can help you improve poor urban soils. Learn how to test your soil and enrich it by adding organic matter and other natural amendments, sheet mulching, and planting green manures. The workshop will also cover basic composting techniques and ways to deal with contaminated soil. We will make a raised bed and a simple planter for the Red Clover Collective’s garden.

Apr 25, 2009: 1-4 pm Rain Barrels

Permaculture offers many simple, effective, and environmentally sound strategies for managing water in the urban environment. One technique is to collect rooftop runoff in a rain barrel and use it to water your garden or lawn. Learn how to set up a rain barrel by helping to install the rainwater collection system at the Red Clover Collective. You may purchase a rain barrel to take home for $60. Please place your order in advance.

Course facilitator Karen Stupski has fifteen years of experience with sustainable living and organic gardening as a member of Heathcote Community. She also has eight years of experience in environmental education, and a Ph.D. in the History of Science, Medicine, and Technology. Karen currently works as Development Director of the Gunpowder Valley Conservancy, a watershed organization and land trust, and is a Regional Organizer and Advisor for Gaia University, a new university dedicated to ecosocial regeneration.

Sliding scale $10-$30. Workshops will take place at the Red Clover Collective in Baltimore, MD. Please RSVP – space is limited.
